Andreas Palmén lives and works as a photographer in Umeå, Sweden.
Andreas got his first position as a photography assistant working with studio photographer Christer Carlson in the heart of Stockholm. This followed just after Andreas had finished studying photography in Hemse, Gotland. In the Carlson studio he got the time to learn and master the art of large format studio photography. Later on, Andreas became head assistant to one of Sweden’s finest portrait photographers – Jonas Fredwall Karlsson. For two years he worked with Karlsson in studio and on location throughout Sweden and in the US. The assignments were often large editorial portrait shoots for major magazines in Sweden, but also commercial work. This was an incredibly intense and important period for Andreas who learnt a great deal about the art of portrait photography.
After some hectic years in the Stockholm media world, Andreas decided to pursue another of his major interests - biology and natural science. In fact, he left Karlsson’s studio to study for a Master’s Degree in Population Genetics and Conservation Biology at Stockholm University. Later, he began a PhD at Södertörn University College and, the oldest university in Sweden, Uppsala University.
Following his heart, Andreas returned to the art of photography after over 10 yrs in the academia. He set up his own business in 2006 and since then he works full time with his own projects and assignments. Andreas Palmén is now mainly focused on taking on freelance assignments and pursuing his interest in fine art photography (www.andreaspalmen.art). Lately Andreas have been more and more involved in documenting scientific research and fieldwork.
In Sweden, Palmén is represented by the image stock agency Synk – specialists in Images with a northern angle.
Andreas Palmén is also a member of the Swedish Association of Professional Photographers (SFF).
